Curing Hep C in Tampa Bay: Success Stories with METRO and Why Your Status Matters

Curing Hep C in Tampa Bay: Success Stories with METRO and Why Your Status Matters

At METRO, comprehensive health means providing accessible, lifesaving care—especially for conditions that too often fly under the radar. Hepatitis C (Hep C) is one of those conditions. It’s a highly treatable infection that can quietly lead to serious liver disease if left unchecked.

We are incredibly proud to share that through our growing Hep C program, 28 patients have successfully completed treatment and been cured or are actively on their way. This milestone isn’t just a number; it reflects what’s possible when routine screening, wrap-around care, and strong community partnerships come together.

Why Hep C is a Tampa Bay Public Health Priority
Hep C continues to impact our communities across Florida and right here in Tampa Bay. Because the virus often shows zero symptoms for years, public health data reveals that many people living with Hep C have no idea they have it.

We continue to see new infections locally every year, particularly among younger adults. This makes routine testing and rapid, stigma-free linkage to care more important than ever. Early diagnosis doesn’t just protect your individual health—it helps stop transmission across our entire community.

Understanding the Virus
Hep C is a bloodborne virus that targets the liver. Without treatment, it can cause:

  • Chronic liver disease
  • Cirrhosis
  • Liver cancer
  • Liver failure

The good news? Today’s direct-acting antiviral medications are absolute game-changers. They cure more than 95% of cases, usually in just 8 to 12 weeks. Hep C is one of the few chronic viral infections that we can completely eliminate with the right treatment.

No Stigma, Just Answers: Why Routine Testing is Key
Because Hep C is often “silent,” testing is the only way to know your status. Screening is particularly crucial for:

  • Adults who have never been tested
  • People with past or current injection drug use
  • Individuals living with HIV
  • Adults born between 1945 and 1965
  • Anyone with elevated liver enzymes or other risk factors

By making screening a normal, routine part of primary care and community services, we can catch infections early and connect our patients to a cure faster.

Our Care Model: Beyond the Cures
Every single one of our cures is a massive win for health equity. It means an improved quality of life, reduced long-term health risks, and a lower overall Hep C burden for Tampa Bay. Our care model is designed to support the whole person and includes:

  • Comprehensive health evaluation and lab monitoring
  • Medication access and expert insurance navigation
  • Ongoing adherence support without judgment
  • Confirmation of sustained virologic response (SVR)—the official clinical marker of a cure

It Takes a Village: Expanding Access Together
Eliminating Hep C requires a united front across healthcare and social services. Our community partnerships help us reach folks who might otherwise face barriers to getting tested and treated. We’re grateful to work alongside:

  • St. Petersburg Free Clinic: Expanding our community outreach and supportive services.
  • Tampa General Hospital: Strengthening our specialty care coordination.
  • Safe Harbor: Supporting patient stabilization and continuity of care.
  • Turning Point: Connecting individuals in recovery directly to testing and treatment.

Together, these collaborations create a stronger, more seamless continuum of care—from that first screening to the final cure.

Looking Ahead: Eliminating Hep C for Good
We’re celebrating this milestone, but we know the work continues. Many people across Tampa Bay remain undiagnosed, and expanding our testing efforts is the key to reaching them. METRO remains deeply committed to:

  • Increasing routine, accessible Hep C screening
  • Breaking down barriers to treatment
  • Strengthening our community partnerships
  • Supporting our patients from testing, to cure, and beyond

With continued focus and collaboration, eliminating Hepatitis C as a public health threat in our region is an achievable goal.

Get Tested. Get Treated. Get Cured.
Hep C is curable—and a simple test is your first step. Knowing your status protects your health and helps build a healthier, stronger community for everyone.
