PrEP is for Women, Too: What Women Need to Know About Rising HIV Rates

PrEP is for Women, Too: What Women Need to Know About Rising HIV Rates

When it comes to sexual health, we believe everybody deserves to be protected. At METRO, we talk a lot about PrEP, but we often hear the misconception that it’s only for specific communities. That couldn’t be further from the truth.

Nationally, new HIV diagnoses among heterosexual individuals are currently steady or even slightly declining. But beneath that encouraging trend lies a frustrating disparity. Today, women account for roughly 1 in 5 new HIV diagnoses in the U.S., yet they represent a shockingly small fraction of PrEP users. We know that PrEP works—it has revolutionized HIV prevention and drastically driven down transmission rates in communities with high usage.

The reality is that HIV impacts everyone. Even as national trends stabilize, HIV rates are quietly rising among women right here in the Tampa Bay area. It’s time to bridge this gap and ensure women have access to the same highly effective prevention tools.

What is PrEP?
Before we dive in, let’s cover the basics. PrEP stands for Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis. It’s a daily pill (or an injection) that, when taken correctly, is over 99% effective at preventing HIV from being transmitted. It’s not just a medical advancement; it’s a tool for personal empowerment, giving you complete control over your sexual health.

PrEP isn’t a replacement for condoms (which protect against other STIs and pregnancy), but it is an incredibly effective layer of protection against HIV.

Why We Need to Talk About Women and HIV
Public health data shows that new HIV diagnoses are, in fact, rising among women in Florida, and the Tampa Bay region is no exception. While anyone can contract HIV, there are specific factors that make certain women more vulnerable. You should absolutely consider PrEP if you are sexually active and:

  • You have multiple sexual partners or are unsure of your partner’s HIV status.
  • Your partner has HIV, particularly if they are not yet virally suppressed.
  • You do not always use condoms.
  • You have recently had a sexually transmitted infection (STI), as this can increase vulnerability to HIV.

So, Why Aren’t More Women on PrEP?
If PrEP is so effective, why isn’t every eligible woman on it? We hear common barriers every single day at our health centers:

  • Stigma. Many women worry that asking for PrEP makes them look “promiscuous” or “dirty.” This is a huge barrier, and at METRO, we’re here to smash it. Taking charge of your health is responsible and powerful—end of story.
  • Lack of Awareness. Sadly, many providers simply aren’t talking to their female patients about PrEP. We’re working to change this by making screening and education a routine part of all our women’s health services.
  • Cost (But Wait!). “It’s too expensive.” We hear this all the time. The truth is that PrEP can be free for most people. Between commercial insurance coverage, Medicaid, and various patient assistance programs, cost should almost never be the reason you don’t access this lifesaving medication. METRO has a whole team of navigators whose entire job is to help you figure this out.

What to Expect When Starting PrEP
Curious about what the process actually looks like? Here is how simple it is:

  1. Schedule a Confident Consultation. Your journey starts with an initial visit with a friendly METRO provider to discuss your health and see if PrEP is a good fit.
  2. Simple Lab Testing. If you decide to move forward, we’ll do an HIV test and screen for other STIs and kidney function.
  3. Follow-Up Visits. Once you’re on the medication, you’ll have a quick check-in every three months for routine monitoring and to refill your prescription.

Your Health, Your Choice.
You have the power to protect yourself. PrEP is safe, it’s incredibly effective, and most importantly, it’s for you.

Don’t wait for someone else to bring it up. Take the first step towards total peace of mind in your sexual health.
